Apple Card Bank Is Blamed for Gender Discrimination
The New York Department of Financial Services received complaints about the Apple Card credit limits. Hereat the Department will conduct an audit of the bank-partner, Goldman Sachs. Bloomberg recently reported about it.
One of the first who pointed out the problem was the co-founder of Basecamp and the former racing driver David Hansson, later Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak joined him. They were outraged that their wives who had perfect credit histories had trifling credit lines on Apple cards. For instance, Hansson said that his wife achieved 20 times worse credit line and left an emotional Twitter post:
The @AppleCard is such a fucking sexist program. My wife and I filed joint tax returns, live in a community-property state, and have been married for a long time. Yet Apple's black box algorithm thinks I deserve 20x the credit limit she does. No appeals work.
Steve Wozniak also spoke out about Apple card. Mrs Wozniak has a credit line of 10 times worse:
The same thing happened to us. I got 10x the credit limit. We have no separate bank or credit card accounts or any separate assets. Hard to get to a human for a correction though. It's a big tech in 2019.
Apple refused to comment on individual customers' complaints. Goldman Sachs said that there is no fundamental difference between family members credit lines and of course it doesn't have any relation to gender discrimination. But probably, Hansson's complaints were heard, as the credit on his wife's card increased in some way, the bank didn't even request any documents to execute that, and still, Hansson didn't seem to be satisfied.
The New York Department of Financial Services stated that all consumers have a right to be served by the bank institution regardless of gender. In another case, any binding actions will be considered as the violation of the law in New York State, as the spokeswoman Linda Lacewell explained.
