Shortly after the United States entered World War I in 1917, the Salvation Army dispatched a mission to France. The functions of the Mission X included the solution of social issues of the American military personnel. Two of its members, Warrant Officer Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance, came up with the idea to bake free doughnuts for the soldiers.
Soon the female volunteers who did this work became known as the Doughnut Dollies. The soldiers loved doughnuts so much that the doughnut theme gained wide popularity throughout the country after the end of the war.
