Yahoo Employee Hacked Accounts and Collected Private Images

Former Yahoo engineer Reyes Daniel Ruiz used the corporate access to hack into the company's user accounts and store private photos and videos of women.

After hacking the Yahoo account, the ex-engineer cracked passwords to the girls' Facebook, iCloud, Gmail, DropBox profiles, gaining access to significant archives of private content. During the trial, Ruiz admitted that he had done it on purpose of getting explicit photos and videos of females, including his friends and colleagues.

Yahoo uncovered the illegal activities while monitoring employee's work account, finding strange activity there. The FBI then started an investigation.

In April, Ruiz was charged with infringement and data interception. The verdict will be announced in February 2020. The ex-engineer can get up to $250,000 fine and up to 5 years in prison. Moreover, he may be obliged to pay compensation to his victims.

Yahoo has not commented on the lawsuit against the ex-employee, so it is still not clear exactly how Reyes Daniel Ruiz entered accounts. The Verge supposes that Ruiz either used security data or Yahoo itself gives employees access to users' data.
