Denison's Groundbreaking AI Summit Paves the Future of Academia
Denison University is not just participating in the AI wave but leading a transformative journey that merges technology with higher education. In collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Denison recently hosted an AI Certified Futures Summit at its Columbus campus, Denison Edge. This event marked a significant leap toward integrating AI into academia.
A Collaborative Leap Forward
From October 13-15, Denison welcomed educational leaders from renowned institutions, including Bates, Bowdoin, and Penn State, to explore AI’s strategic roles in education. Liv Gjestvang, Denison’s Vice President and Chief Information Officer, emphasized the pivotal role of AI in enhancing critical thinking and intellectual curiosity.
Building Strategic Partnerships
Kristi Wellington-Baker of AWS highlighted the summit’s importance in creating paths for innovation. She stated, “AI strategies can be integrated to increase digital literacy and experiential learning, aiding students in career preparations and financial aid access.”
Her insights resonated with attendees, like Sherri Castanzo from Bowdoin College, who was particularly interested in change management strategies.
A Platform for Innovation
Denison’s AI initiative doesn’t stop at discussions. They’ve developed DenAI, a custom AI platform providing secure access to AI tools like ChatGPT. As Heath Hase, Denison’s Senior Director of Innovation, explained, “The pilot allows us to develop guiderails and expectations when using AI.”
More than 200 students have already earned AI credentials, enhancing their résumé and career prospects, thanks to initiatives led by Lori Robbins, Denison’s head of AI strategy. Robbins notes that employers highly seek AI competencies as they often overshadow other experiences.
Engaging the Broader Community
The summit was a part of Denison’s broader commitment, which includes an AI-focused faculty symposium. This event unraveled numerous ways AI could be employed in classrooms and research, demonstrating Denison’s strategic focus on fostering analytical and critical thinking.
A Visionary Move
With plans for a $35 million data science center, Denison is poised to integrate data expertise within a liberal arts framework. Such bold steps align with the accolade from U.S. News & World Report, naming Denison the #4 most innovative national liberal arts college.
Beyond a Conference
More than a one-time event, the summit initiated an AI innovation network ensuring continued collaboration and strategy sharing among institutions. As Gjestvang articulated, “It’s about asking deeper human questions and fostering new creativity.”
Denison University is setting a high benchmark in education, balancing technology and human insight, proving that AI can indeed serve as a catalyst for profound academic advancement.
According to Denison University, this summit showcases the potential and promise of AI’s integration into the academic sphere.
