OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Search, a New Challenger to Google
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Search, an advanced web search feature integrated directly into its ChatGPT platform. Designed to offer real-time, in-depth responses, the feature is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and select waitlisted users, with plans to roll out to enterprise, educational, and free users in the coming weeks.
ChatGPT Search is powered by a specialized version of the GPT-4o model and marks a significant step forward for AI-powered information retrieval. Users can input questions in natural language and receive relevant, up-to-date responses, complete with links and citations to trusted sources. This new capability covers diverse information, including news updates, sports scores, stock data, and local events.
In a recent demo, ChatGPT Search showcased its ability to respond to queries such as stock market updates or restaurant recommendations with interactive graphs, maps, and linked citations. Users can refine results through follow-up questions, maintaining the context of the conversation for a deeper, more personalized search experience.
This new tool aims to boost factual accuracy by providing immediate access to current data, reducing instances of outdated or erroneous AI responses. The feature will not display ads, setting it apart from traditional search engines and raising questions about long-term funding models, especially for free users.
With a focus on responsible content sourcing, OpenAI has partnered with major publishers like Hearst, News Corp, and Condé Nast.
