In a heartfelt discussion at the GS LIVE studios during the 35th General Synod, the United Church of Christ’s Love of Children leaders, Rev. Trayce Potter and Rev. Tyler Ung, shared a transformative vision for youth ministry. Joined by young Micah Potter, they emphasized the importance of nurturing relationships with children beyond the walls of the church.
Shifting the Narrative
Potter and Ung addressed the common plea within churches for more youth, proposing a shift in perspective. “It’s not about rescuing churches with more children but about building relationships outside the sanctuary,” Potter explained. Their message encourages a move from numbers to nurturing genuine connections.
The Role of Prayergrounds
Recognizing the value of children’s presence in worship, Ung introduced the concept of “prayergrounds,” spaces where children and adults can worship together. This intergenerational ministry approach highlights the significance of children as integral members of the worshipping community. According to United Church of Christ, this represents a powerful new path forward for spiritual inclusion.
Into the Deep: A Summer of Advocacy
Love of Children plans to embody the theme “into the deep,” extending their advocacy throughout the summer of 2026. With a focus on deep engagement, they aim to inspire youth through a series of initiatives in Washington, D.C., offering a platform for voices often overlooked.
A Call to Community
Potter’s passionate words resonate: “Surface level connections are easy, but true understanding lies in the depths.” As the Love of Children team continues their journey, their mission inspires a vibrant future where churches thrive through profound relationships with youth.
