Avi Schiffmann, a Harvard dropout and tech innovator, has unveiled a unique AI-powered device called Friend. This wearable pendant, priced at $99, is designed to serve as a virtual companion, offering emotional support to users rather than focusing on productivity.

Unlike traditional AI assistants that help with tasks, Friend is built to listen to you anytime, anywhere, and offer responses through an app on your phone. Its voice assistant, Emily, can send encouraging messages, such as wishing you luck before an interview, aiming to create a deeper emotional connection. The device constantly listens and engages with users via Bluetooth, but all interactions remain private, with no stored recordings.

Schiffmann’s vision is that Friend will provide companionship by allowing users to talk about their day, share feelings, and receive supportive feedback. He emphasizes that Friend is not meant to replace human relationships but to enhance the emotional experience of interacting with AI.

The first 30,000 units of Friend are set to launch in January 2025, offering a fresh take on AI by focusing on emotional well-being.
