The lexicographers of The Collins English Dictionary, a famous online and printed dictionary of English, have chosen the Word of the Year 2019. Okay, everyone, a drumroll! It’s a “climate strike” word combination, as is reported on the dictionary’s website.
As compared with 2015, over the past year, the collocation “climate strike” has been used 100 times more often.
The list also includes the following words:
- Deepfake is a technology that allows you to create fake videos or photos; for instance, realistically change faces in videos on PornHub.
- Influencer is a person who influences social media users and sets trends.
- Rewilding is the practice of letting nature take care of itself.
The Word of the Year 2018, according to Collins Dictionary, was “single-use”. According to the Oxford Dictionary, it was “toxic”.
