U.S.-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC) held an online webinar, "Establishing the American University in Kyiv (AUK)," on Monday, Dec 14, 2020.
The USUBC was established in 1995 to market friendly bilateral ties between Ukraine and the United States by advancing U.S. companies' trade and investment interests in Ukraine's significant emerging market.
American University Kyiv (AUK) is a new private university in Kyiv, which will be formed in partnership with one of the world's leading U.S. universities to provide world-class education. It is set to open in September 2021 with access to the curriculum from Arizona State University, a public research university on five campuses across the Phoenix metropolitan area and four regional learning centers throughout Arizona. ASU is one of the largest public universities by enrollment in the U.S.
The opening of an American University in Kyiv will be a substantial contribution to higher education in Ukraine. It will allow Ukrainian students to get a modern, exclusive, innovative education and move away from Soviet teaching methods. After five years of war with Russia, Ukraine has proved that it is a patriotic and united country, which deserves more.
American University Project in Kyiv is unique because many universities would like to work globally, but they don't have many resources or staff. American University Kyiv will bring together investors from Ukraine and Georgia. The partnership is co-managed by Cintana Education, a world leader in university design and transformation that has launched new universities across the Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Americas.
Nowadays, nearly 93% of students and 87% of employers believe that higher education in Ukraine does not meet the challenges of the 21st century, so 91% of students would like to study in a university in English that's based in Ukraine. Many Ukrainians also do not want to study in Ukraine. They are looking for a more prestigious education because, unfortunately, almost all Ukrainian diplomas are not accepted by foreign universities. In this regard, Ukrainians move abroad for a better education.
Now Ukrainians will have a chance to receive American education and degree without leaving the country. AUK will advance a vision of quality and globally significant higher education in Ukraine. Arizona State University is the most innovative university within the United States. Therefore, the partnership with it will help transform education in Ukraine.
At first, the American University Project will work according to the ASU curriculum, but it will be blended up to meet Ukrainian students' demands in the future. Ukrainian teachers will be attracted to creating all sorts of convenient conditions for students and correcting the curriculum. In addition to the teaching staff, lawyers, and business people who have achieved certain heights in their fields will tell students how they have achieved such success.
