Minecraft is marking its 15th anniversary in grand style. During the Minecraft Live 2023 event, the game's creators announced that it has now surpassed an astonishing 300 million copies sold, further solidifying its position as the best-selling video game of all time.
Helen Chiang, head of Mojang Studios, expressed her excitement, stating, "As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks."
To put this monumental achievement into perspective, Minecraft has outshone sales of nearly every form of entertainment media since record-keeping began. Even Michael Jackson's Thriller, the best-selling album in history, falls short with approximately 70 million copies sold. The PlayStation 2, the best-selling console, managed around 155 million units. Notably, even Grand Theft Auto V, the second-best-selling video game, lags far behind with 185 million copies sold, according to The Verge.
This significant milestone was revealed alongside exciting updates and announcements. Minecraft is set to welcome a new adventure, Minecraft Star Wars: Path of the Jedi, a story-driven DLC set in the Star Wars universe. Players will assume the role of a Padawan, customizing their own droid, crafting lightsabers, and embarking on missions across the galaxy.
