A German company called Carbon Mobile has introduced a whole new kind of smartphone that marks the beginning of an era where customers value sustainability in their phones above other things. The distinctive feature of the new device – Carbon 1 Mark II – is that it’s entirely made of carbon fiber instead of traditional metal, polycarbonate, or glass and metal materials.

The new smartphone is made using the HyRECM Technology (Hybrid Radio Enabled Composite Materials), which the company calls a “revolutionary new process.” To create the so-called “monocoque” design, manufacturers interweave carbon fibers with “radio permitting” composites. This technology makes the Carbon 1 Mark II an extremely lightweight and thin device. The super-thin 6.3mm phone weighs only 125g. For comparison, the weight of the iPhone 11 is 194g, but it is still quite durable.

The new smartphone is powered with a Mediatek Helio P90 processor and has a 6-inch AMOLED display protected with a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 that “delivers optical clarity and touch sensitivity whilst ensuring scratch and damage resistance.” It is also equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that can be found below the power button.
