The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Became the 7th Best-Selling Game in the World
Skyrim has achieved a remarkable milestone by selling over 60 million copies, securing its place as the seventh best-selling video game of all time. The news was shared by Todd Howard, the game director, during an interview with IGN.
Todd Howard explained that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim achieved this feat nearly 12 years after its initial release on November 11, 2011. The game's inclusion in the top ten best-selling titles in history at the seventh spot is a testament to its enduring popularity. Analysts attribute the impressive sales figures to the multiple reissues of the game across various platforms.
Skyrim's achievement places it ahead of iconic titles such as 1985's Super Mario Bros and just behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the best-selling rankings. Notably, the game has sold an additional 30 million copies in the past seven years, effectively doubling its sales since 2016.
The release of the Anniversary Edition in 2021, offering additional content, likely contributed to this growth, although Bethesda has not provided specific sales figures for that version. The Nintendo Switch and VR versions, released in 2017 and 2018 respectively, are also believed to have significantly boosted Skyrim's sales.
During the interview, Todd Howard also discussed the upcoming game Starfield and its vast universe.
